Από τον τόμο 40, η περίληψη στα αγγλικά και εικόνες από την ιταλική έκδοση: Volume 40 “Crimson Goddess” In ancient Japan, a long time ago, the falling star Yorei showed up in the sky of Kyo city: it was a bad omen, which had already brought misfortune in the past. And indeed, soon the shogunate and the emperor broke up: the emperor’s family moved to the south, in Nara region, city of Yoshino, while the shogunate remained in Kyo, creating a new imperial court. The samurai families divided into two factions and the internecine wars turned soon into a civil war. But also many catastrophes occurred: big fires destroyed many temples in Nara region, then a big earthquake, a volcanic eruption of Fujiyama, which lowered of hundreds of metres... In that terrible period, one day a bonze (Buddhist monk) had a vision: a plum tree blooming with crimson flowers. The Crimson Goddess, the spirit of the red plum tree, came to protect humans from Yorei and to bring peace on Earth: this is what the bonze said. People started praying to the Crimson Goddess, but the wars became more and more violent, and the hearts of the humans became more and more corrupted and full of hatred. Some time passed, and people forgot about the goddess and about Yorei. Kyo was ruined: fires and dead bodies were everywhere, bandits and looters were everywhere. Then dry seasons and contagious diseases killed even more people. It seems that the origin of all the disasters was the conflict between Shinto gods, originally from Japan, and Buddhism, which arrived from China. Moreover, humans were interested only in power and wealth, and they abused even Buddhism to achieve their goals. The emperor of Kyo had the same dream for 7 nights in a row: the Crimson Goddess whom the bonze saw several years before... That was a sign: the goddess was about to show up! The emperor ordered that a Buddhist sculptor had to be found, who was able to create a statue of the Crimson Goddess. The Crimson Goddess appeared... Who was calling her? Probably the smell of blood. Humans were destroying each other... Maybe it was just their business... But no, they were destroying earth and nature as well... Their souls had to be purified... Something happened to the goddess. She felt something she had never felt before... She was both happy and sad; she felt a certain warmth... What was happening to her? In a bamboo forest, in an old abandoned Buddhist temple, lived a man. He was the son of a farmer. He lost his whole family at the age of 6 in the war. He entered a monastery, then he was noticed for his talent as a sculptor and he became apprentice of a sculptor. He was very good at sculpting, but he didn’t agree with his sensei who created beautiful sculptures for rich families and samurai and very simple and plain ones for the poor people. Then, he was sent away and he joined a group of thieves. After all his fellows died, he retired to the old temple, to live in peace with nature. He went on creating sculptures of gods and goddesses for the dead people. He used to write the word “Isshin” (truth) on the base of his statues... The messenger Terufusa was sent by the emperor of Kyo to look for the predestined sculptor. It had to be someone who lived in a bamboo forest. He sculpted 100 statues, and he “kept the truth”, as an onmyoji said. Terufusa found the man. He named him “Isshin” and he had some assistants and tools arrive to the old temple, since the sculptor didn’t want to move. Anyway, Isshin could not find inspiration and lost self-confidence. Terufusa and his men guarded him every day and night, so that he couldn't escape. One day, Isshin saw a Buddhist monk, who told him to go towards the south, to find the wood of the thousand-year plum tree to create his sculpture. The monk disappeared and Terufusa and the others were asleep... Isshin started walking towards the South. Some bandits attacked him, and he begged them to leave his sculpting tools to him. The leader of the thieves laughed at him, but he gave him his tools, provided that he would make a sculpture for him when he was dead... Isshin was excited: finally he understood his mission in life! Some time later, he found the body of the leader of the bandits. He was about to die! Before he died, Isshin gave him his statue to hold in his hands... He cheered him up even for a moment... But Isshin felt that that bandit saved him somehow... He walked and walked towards the South, sometimes led by the monk, till one day he saw something... Like a flower... And he smelt the scent of plums... He tried to follow that vision and... He disappeared in a valley... In a mountain village, next to the sacred Valley of Red Plum Trees, lived a mysterious girl named Akoya. Her parents died when she was a little child, and she was adopted by the grandmother of the chief of the village. Akoya used to talk to animals and plants, she could understand nature, and she knew how to make special medicines from plants, to save human beings. One day she found wounded Isshin and she cured him. Isshin lost his memory and the two lived together in the valley. Akoya was the Crimson Goddess in a human body. Isshin and Akoya desperately fell in love with each other. The grandmother of the chief of the village and all the inhabitants of the village wanted Isshin and Akoya to separate, because they thought Isshin would bring bad luck. For the festival of the village, where the people used to pray to the Crimson Goddess, General Kosunoki, member of one of the most important noble families of the South, escort of the emperor, and also three strangers, dressed up like sarugaku actors, arrived to the valley. Akoya made some symbols with red sand on the people's foreheads. Both General Kosunoki and the leader of the three strangers realized that the sand was... Tan, the elixir of life and gold! Isshin was watching Akoya in silence. He was sad, because Akoya became unreachable. If the goddess fell in love with a man, one of the two was destined to die... But Isshin’s love wouldn’t end even after death... The three strangers were actually three spies sent from the emperor of the North (Yoshino). They stole 3 symbols of the imperial family of the South: a sword, a mirror and a sphere. Only one of them was killed by a samurai. Akoya helped Kosunoki to find the other men with the three stolen objects, but Kosunoki didn’t keep the promise and killed the men. Even though the relationship between Akoya and Kosunoki was ruined, the general obtained the Valley of Red Plum Trees as a reward from the emperor. The leader of the spies of Yoshino kept plotting against him: he surely wanted the valley for the tan! Isshin started feeling a strong passion inside... He wanted to know who he was, because he felt he had an important mission in life... Akoya didn't want him to remember... In the meantime, Isshin turned out to be very good at fighting with a sword (and the inhabitants of the village accused him to be a bandit) and at sculpting statues... Akoya was in love with Isshin... Her human feelings prevented her from understanding the heart of nature any longer! She was not a goddess any longer! Isshin and Akoya had to be separated! Isshin was kept prisoner at Kosunoki's palace... Three months later, Kosunoki wanted to meet Akoya again. In his palace, the samurai kept talking about the war against Yoshino every day. But Kosunoki was not sure about that, after hearing Akoya’s words... When he met Akoya again, she was very skinny and weak: she kept thinking of Isshin every day, and she didn't eat or drink anything... Kosunoki promised her that she would meet Isshin again, and then talked to her about his doubts... Akoya persuaded him to stop the war... But... In the meantime, the samurai of the South already started the war without him... He had to join them, not to dishonour the memory of his father... He set Isshin free, giving him a sword to fight... In the meantime, the fake actors, spies of Yoshino, entered the sacred valley to look for tan. But only one man was allowed to enter that valley: it was Isshin, finally aware that he had to create a statue with the wood of the sacred plum tree... A bonze appeared, showing him a hatchet and the sacred valley. A very weak Akoya next to the thousand-year plum tree met Isshin again in the sacred valley. In that moment, Akoya became a goddess again. Some years later, in Kyo, the emperor wondered where Isshin was. He disappeared so that he could not be rewarded. Terufusa told him about a mysterious bonze who started wandering around Japan. That bonze, whose name was unknown, used to create wonderful statues and to give them to the inhabitants of the villages he visited. Those statues brought health, food, good luck, whatever was needed. Below all his statues, the word “truth” was engraved. Probably, as the spirit of the Crimson Goddess was in Akoya, the spirit of Buddha was in this man... Impressions of the audience Since the beginning of the play, the stage presence of Chigusa Tsukikage is very strong. Even if she wears a mask, her feelings are expressed clearly to the audience, and everyone in every moment knows if she is interpreting Akoya (the woman) or the Crimson Goddess. Eisuke Hayami is amazed: it’s the same Chigusa Tsukikage he used to know! Genzo is also a very good actor: he is the narrator, but also Isshin and other characters. There’s a scene where Akoya and Isshin talk about love: their words are very touching... There is no age, appearance, social status... When they meet, those two souls attract each other, looking for the other half of themselves, eager to be one, madly desiring the other half... This is falling in love... [...] My love... We were separated but now we are one again... Now that we’ve met, how can we separate? We can’t fall apart any longer. My name and my past are not as important as you are. I’ll stay here even if I don’t know who I am... Maya was so captivated by the play that she sat on the ground. Masumi can’t help watching her. Those words make him think about her even more... Suddenly, Sakurakoji stands up and sits next to Maya, putting his arm around her shoulders. Masumi is shocked. A soul divided into two... Yin and Yang... This is Akoya’s and Isshin’s love... Father... This is the girl you have always loved... And now... Maya! Do you want to interpret it? With that boy? Ayumi is enchanted by Chigusa Tsukikage’s performance. And she notices that Maya is acting herself... She is already learning by heart the whole play! The most important scene ( the last time Akoya and Isshin meet, and Isshin has to cut the sacred tree to make the sculpture ) has not been shown. Nobody knows what will happen: Maya and Ayumi will create their own scenes, for the demonstrative show in Tokyo. Tsukikage felt very bad several times during the show, but the audience almost didn’t notice it... Though the scenes where Akoya felt bad seemed too true-life... Anyway, the show is over: Ichiren gave Chigusa the strength to perform one last time! Now, it’s Maya’s and Ayumi’s turn! One of them will create the new “Crimson Goddess”! The audience is enchanted. They clap their hands loud... Rei and the other actors of the Tsukikage and Unicorn company approach to the sensei... She is sitting by the plum tree... Her eyes are closed... She’s bleeding from her mouth... Some scenes from Chigusa Tsukikage's last performance of the Crimson Goddess | |

| Περίληψη στα αγγλικά και εικόνες από την ιταλική έκδοση του τόμου 41. Volume 41Time for a new “Crimson Goddess”Chigusa Tsukikage is about to die... But she hears Ichiren calling her again and she stands up! At the curtain call she looks in an excellent shape. As Rei remarks, the great actress Chigusa Tsukikage is performing and saying goodbye to theatre. Eisuke Hayami asks one of his employees to take him back... He wants to go away before his feelings disappear... Chigusa Tsukikage thanks the audience for watching her show. She explains to them that Akoya’s love for Isshin was her love for Ichiren Ozaki. Even if he was married, they were soul mates, connected thanks to the “Crimson Goddess”... They could always understand each other without words... They were one soul, and even now Ichiren is with her... And he will be with her as long as she lives... But before her fire is extinguished, she wants to light up another candle! The woman breaks the mask of the “Crimson Goddess” into 2 parts. Then, she says to Maya and Ayumi that to create something new, they have to destroy the old: they have to create their own mask of the “Crimson Goddess”, without imitating her!
Two souls meeting After the play, refreshments are served in the valley of the red plum trees. Maya is daydreaming about the “Crimson Goddess” in the backstage area. She wonders if her soul mate is Masumi Hayami... That would be a dream... She puts on the kimono of the Crimson Goddess and she dances next to the thousand-year-old plum tree. Suddenly many red plum blossoms float in the air. In the meantime, Masumi Hayami is wondering if there is a soul mate for him. Suddenly, the air is painted with a red fog... For a moment, he sees the Crimson Goddess! Maya is in front of him, with a blooming branch of red plum tree in her hand. A river runs between them, so they cannot get close to each other. Maya would love to confess her love to him; she uses Akoya’s words: "That day, when I met you for the first time in the valley... I understood immediately that you were my soul mate [...] There is no age, appearance, social status... When they meet, those two souls attract each other, looking for the other half of themselves, eager to be one, madly desiring the other half... This is falling in love... Please... Leave your name, your past, be only mine, my love..."
While saying those words, Maya prays that her purple rose fan will answer her, that he will reveal his identity... She holds out her hand to him... Masumi doesn’t understand what is happening. He holds out his hand to her... Their bodies can’t reach, but their souls meet... They sweetly embrace for a moment... "My love... We were separated, but now we are one..."
It lasts just a moment, but both feel as if they have really embraced. Was it an illusion? They really felt each other’s warmth... Masumi heard Maya calling him: my love... They keep staring at each other, without saying a word. "Hayami san... If you only had crossed this river... If you only..." Someone calls Masumi’s name... It’s Shiori, whose perfect timing ruins the atmosphere... Maya hides... Masumi and Shiori go away arm in arm... Maya wonders if it was just an illusion... No! It can’t be! It was a connection between two hearts! Who knows if Masumi felt the same? Masumi wonders if it was just an illusion... Anyway... "I didn’t cross the river... If I only had had the courage to cross it and get to the other side... If I only had had the courage..." Και μερικές από τις παραπάνω εικόνες, από την ιαπωνική έκδοση.

| Περίληψη στα αγγλικά και εικόνες από την ιταλική έκδοση του τόμου 41. Back to everyday life Eisuke wakes up in the hotel. He’s very surprised to know that his son Masumi is still in his room: he didn’t eat, he didn’t sleep, he kept sighing... And when he finally shows up, he is still very absent-minded and clumsy... He boots a cup of tea which is on the ground, he answers the telephone with the receiver upside-down, he drinks his father’s medicine... Shiori and the managers who came to visit Eisuke hardly believe what they see! They all leave for Tokyo, except Masumi and Eisuke who will get to Tokyo later. When Eisuke is alone with his son, he asks him if he is in love with another woman: Masumi denies that. Eisuke is pleased: Shiori is a sensitive woman, and he doesn’t have to lose self-control. He has an important task in Tokyo: that marriage will be very helpful for Daito! Eisuke will get to Tokyo for the ceremony. And then they talk about the “Crimson Goddess”. They agree that Daito could never produce a better play. Eisuke wants that play for Daito at any cost: this is Masumi’s mission! If Ayumi performs it, there will be no problem. But Maya... She hates Masumi... And she is a dangerous girl: she bet everything on acting! She can become the best actress ever or disappear... She is a true genius: people like her are able to change the world! Maya’s success could depend on the constant support of someone... Anyway, if Maya wins the competition, and if she doesn’t accept to work for Daito... Well, Masumi will have to destroy her! Masumi is shocked: should he destroy such a talented actress? Eisuke is surprised to see such a pitying Masumi: does he feel a sense of guilt for killing her mother? Masumi has to do what his father orders him to do: otherwise, Eisuke himself will do it!
Tsukikage is at the old temple with Genzo. She is recovering from the last fatigue. Ayumi is packing her luggage to get back to Tokyo with Onodera and Kei Akame. The day after Maya will leave too, and also the actors of Tsukikage and Unicorn Company. Ayumi thinks about her “Crimson Goddess”... She thinks she hasn’t understood her completely... Maya is even more absent minded than usual. Rei and Sayaka are worried for her! She cannot even help them with the housework: she spends all the time daydreaming and crying... Maya wants to see Masumi again... The only thing she knows is that she loves him! Chigusa Tsukikage calls Maya and Ayumi and takes them to the bridge which leads to the sacred plum tree valley. Genzo sets fire to the bridge: it will be impossible to reach the valley from that moment on! Maya and Ayumi learnt what they had to learn in that valley: now they have to create their goddesses in Tokyo thanks to their imagination and technique. All the answers they look for are in their hearts.
The fight During the last night in the valley, Ayumi can't sleep. Even if it's raining, she goes out to the woods and rehearses the “Crimson Goddess”. Maya wakes up and follows her. When Ayumi notices her she asks her if she came to watch what her rival is doing... Maya replies that she could never compare herself to her... She could never make such a beautiful performance... Ayumi is sick of her obsequious behavior... She starts telling her everything she thinks: she has always felt a loser to her, when she performed her “Crimson Goddess” she has hated her so much that she was about to let her die falling down the rotten bridge... Maya arouses all the worst feelings in her! Maya can't believe what Ayumi is saying... She starts crying: she pities Ayumi, who has always been an unreachable target for her. Ayumi slaps her on her cheek. The girls start fighting and throwing mud at each other! During the fight, they say that they will perform the “Crimson Goddess” and then they offend each other... Finally it stops raining. The two girls have fought hard... They sit on the ground, all covered with mud, bruised and exhausted. Ayumi: How it hurts! And what if my face swells? Being an actress, you should have been more carful! Maya: You look what you have done! I have my lip split! Ayumi: It serves you right! Maya: Perfidious girl! Ayumi: What an ugly face! Maya: You should see yours! The two girls burst into laughter. They congratulate each other for fighting well! They walk together back. Both feel much better. And they know each other even more than before. Now they are ready to compete for the “Crimson Goddess”, and both are determined to win! After 2 months since they have arrived to the valley, it's time to leave... Ayumi, Onodera and Akame leave first. Maya Kuronuma and Sakurakoji are going to leave the following day.
Maya in love While Maya is wandering in the woods, Masumi pays a visit to Tsukikage before leaving for Tokyo. His father will spend some more time in that village to recover. He congratulates Tsukikage on her performance. The sensei asks him why he wants the royalties for “Crimson Goddess”... For the same reason why his father wants them? Masumi says that probably he wanted them for this was his father's biggest dream... ...Until I saw the “Crimson Goddess” she has performed... Masumi Hayami looks strange. A cat enters and he looks upset... He asks for more tea... Silence... There is no sign of Maya's presence here... Maybe she is trekking... To be honest, I came here to look for her... Just seeing her for a moment would have been enough... I wished to meet her from the bottom of my heart... I'm so sad because I couldn't do that? It's like if an icy wind blew on my heart... Tsukikage is surprised... What's wrong with him? Masumi has to go. While his car leaves, Maya arrives... She sees his car... Was it him? She runs to Genzo, who tells her who the visitor was. Maya enters the room and embraces the pillow Masumi was sitting on... It's still warm... If she had arrived a few minutes earlier she would have seen him! She cries... She is sad because she couldn't meet him? Is it possible? Does she love him that much? In the meantime, Masumi is driving his car. He feels melancholy and confused... Was Maya's confession a joke or what? He has to go to the Red Plum Trees Valley once again to understand Maya... But... When he arrives... He finds Kuronuma looking at the bridge which doesn't exist any longer... Tsukikage said that the valley was just an illusion, and it exists in each one's heart... Thanks to the play, they will be the bridge between illusion and reality... It's in Tsukikage's character! Maya is spending her last night in the mountain village with Genzo and the sensei. She doesn't eat much... She is very thoughtful... Tsukikage asks her what's wrong... Maya asks her if soul mates like in “Crimson Goddess” exist in real life. Tsukikage is surprised. She smiles at her: Yes, they exist, if she believes it. Ichiren was her soul mate. "But, meeting your soul mate is a miracle. Nobody on Earth knows if s/he will meet him/her or not. Maya, you're still young. You'll meet many people. Many will make your heart beat. Maybe you'll meet the other half of your soul, maybe not. But if you do, you'll surely understand it. Because your souls will vibrate... You'll consider each other the one, beyond reason. Even if you have a different social status, even if you are far away... Your hearts will understand each other, and you'll want to live your life together..." Maya asks her: "If someone meets that special person, does he or she understand it immediately?" No, not necessarily: Chigusa met Ichiren at the age of 7, and she understood her feelings several years later... "Maybe one day you'll meet your soul mate. Listen to me, Maya. If you feel that it's him, don't give up. You were surely born to meet each other. Age, class, position don't matter, you'll be fascinated by each other. If he is your soul mate, he'll surely have the same feelings... Wherever he is and whatever he is doing... If you ever meet him, be courageous and make the first step! Something will start from that! If you are afraid of the consequences, you'll never get anything... Remember that he has the same feelings!" Only Maya can open the doors of her destiny... "But remember, Maya. the most important thing is the connection between souls. A superficial love doesn't lead to anything... And when you live together, you'll understand why you were born. This is the Crimson Goddess’ love!" Tsukikage sees two falling stars. Maya is lucky! This is her last night in the mountain village, and if she manages to make a wish upon a star it will come true... Hayami san... What was your wish? Something I am not allowed to know? It's too sad it will never come true... Star.. Please fall! And make my wish come true! Please! A falling star shows up in the sky... All the actors and directors have left the home place of the “Crimson Goddess”. Tsukikage is alone with Genzo. Tsukikage tells him she was very surprised that Maya is really in love: the girl asked her if soul mates exist! "Even if I don't know who the man she loves is, I am sure he is someone nobody would ever expect... Someone who would shock me as well! It's marvelous that it happened in the eve of the play... I am not sure they are soul mates, anyway Maya will learn a lot... There couldn't be a better study!" Tsukikage looks very pleased... "Nothing is useless in life! Everything helps improving! Live, Maya! Love, love! Be hurt, suffer! And then, perform the “Crimson Goddess”!"
Masumi’s engagement party Tokyo. Maya goes to Daito Art Production, determined to confess her love to Masumi Hayami. She overhears that he is at Queen's Hotel for a reception. She immediately goes there. She meets Mizuki who is happy but also surprised to see her. Maya reads on a panel at the entrance of the big meeting room that the reception is an engagement reception... Masumi Hayami and Shiori Takamiya! She can't say a word. She enters the room and she sees the happy couple... Masumi's face is so happy! Maya is ashamed of herself for what she was about to do... She accepts a glass of champagne which a waiter offers her, but she drops it. The noise of the broken glass arouses anyone's attention. Now they are all looking at Maya, Masumi included. There is a strange look in Eisuke Hayami's eyes...

Sakurakoji encourages Maya Sakurakoji pops by at Maya’s place to encourage her. He is her partner and he wants her to tell him about her problems: suffering together is better than suffering alone, and they have something to share: The Crimson Goddess. Maya is deeply moved. She never thought of other people, as if she were the only actress... Rei and Sayaka comment that the two of them are a very nice couple. Masumi and his fiancée are having dinner together at a luxurious restaurant. He is rather quiet, as usual. Shiori asks him if he is thinking of the Crimson Goddess, and she adds that every time he is questioned about this topic, he behaves like a child who wants to protect something precious. Then she comments on Ayumi’s performance: she remained speechless at the young actress’s talent. Masumi invites Shiori to dance and she thinks how sweet and kind he is. Later, while walking out of the restaurant they see a flower shop. Shiori is looking at all the flowers in enchantment and Masumi offers to buy her any flowers she likes. Guess what, she picks up some purple roses! Masumi immediately says: “No!”, but promptly adds more kindly that other flowers suit her better than those. Shiori hides her feelings, but she is worried and wonders what Masumi’s reaction means. She never saw such an expression on his face... The following day, all the newspapers and media talk about Ayumi and apparently many fans are already asking for info about her as the Crimson Goddess. Maya keeps not being able to enter the role at the rehearsals. In the evening, Masumi invites Kuronuma for dinner at an oden stand. Kuronuma informs Masumi that Maya has a lot of problems in performing her role, especially after seeing Ayumi. The director adds that Maya is actually the only one who can become the Crimson Goddess, not just perform it. She just needs to believe in herself! Maya and Masumi meet in the rain... Maya is in a park in the rain, trying to understand the Crimson Goddess, when Masumi Hayami arrives... It’s the day after his meeting with director Kuronuma. Masumi greets her, adding that it’s a long time they haven’t met. In the meantime Sakurakoji is getting to the same place, bringing an umbrella. He sees Maya and Masumi talk.
Masumi tells Maya about his conversation with Kuronuma; she will not be able to perform if she goes on like that. Maya confirms that she cannot do it, then Masumi asks her why she acts, why she wants to perform that character. Then, he grabs her by the arm and leads her to a flyover, asking her to perform Crimson Goddess with all that noise in the background. Sakurakoji follows them, unseen. Maya tries to act, but cannot do very much. Masumi asks her again: "Why and for whom are you acting? I noticed that: at Daito nobody believes in Crimson Goddess, nobody wants to believe in it! It is something that exists only on the stage, and disappears when the play is over... The Crimson Goddess’s words and heart are not real in this world... Maya, make me believe in the Crimson Goddess... Make me feel that she is real in this world, for me and for your audience... And if you succeed..."
Then Sakurakoji shows up, interrupting him. He remarks that they are getting wet in the rain, and offers an umbrella to Masumi Hayami. He would share the other umbrella with Maya. Masumi doesn’t accept his offer and goes away. Sakurakoji tries to talk to Maya but Maya’s mind is elsewhere. She finally realizes that if she doesn’t believe in herself, she cannot expect other people to do it. "Yes, maybe I can do it..."

Tsukikage is back! Tsukikage sensei is still resting in the mountains. Genzo is always by her side. They discuss about Maya and Ayumi. Genzo suspects that Chigusa already knows how the trial performance of the two young actresses will be, and Chigusa confirms that. Genzo then says he feels sorry for Maya, but unexpectedly Chigusa corrects him. For the time being, Maya holds a dominant position! Genzo is very surprised and wonders what it is, that Tsukikage sensei can see. "Something our eyes could never see..." Finally, Chigusa Tsukikage claims that she is ready to go back to Tokyo. "It’s getting cold in the morning and in the evening. The time has come, Genzo."
Masumi is in his office. The magazine which slandered Maya is in the trash bin. He is looking out of the window and thinking of Maya... Shiori has a date with her fiance, but when she arrives at his office he is not there. It’s the first time something like this has happened... Shiori waits in Masumi’s office. She takes a look at the magazine Masumi has thrown away. Then she notices that one of Masumi’s drawers is not completely closed. Inside it are the photos Hijiri took of Maya and Sakurakoji (see volume 42). Immediately Shiori remembers when she found Maya’s photo album in Masumi’s holiday house by the seaside, a long time ago. It is the album Maya sent to her purple rose fan as a thank you present: it contains photos of all the roles she played. Shiori starts suspecting something... Masumi is always so cold to that girl, still he keeps so many photos of her... She heads to Kid’s Studio, where Hijiri has just brought some purple roses for Maya Kitajima... Shiori talks to Kuronuma about the mysterious purple rose fan and thinks about Masumi who didn’t want to buy her those flowers...
Maya asks Hijiri to record a message for her fan. She says she wants to thank him in person: it doesn’t matter who he is, he is the dearest person ever to her. She wants to meet him on the same flyover where “someone helped her and made her understand the Crimson Goddess and how to play her Akoya.” Maya kisses a purple rose! Masumi has no intention of meeting Maya: he is afraid of breaking the only bond he has with her. Still, he doesn’t resist and finds an excuse to drive to the place of the date... Maya is waiting on the flyover, holding the bunch of purple roses. The two journalists who wrote that bad article approach her and start to harass her. Kuronuma and Sakurakoji have been informed and are coming to protect her, more or less at the same time when Masumi arrives.
The three of them see Maya and the two journalists quarreling, and the bunch of roses falling from the flyover onto the busy road. Maya runs down to try and pick it up, but Sakurakoji manages to stop her before she is run over by the cars. When the traffic light turns green, Maya finds a single rose still in good condition and she tenderly kisses the flower. Masumi, Sakurakoji and Kuronuma stare at the young actress. They are astonished: she really looks like Akoya.
Sakurakoji walks Maya away. Kuronuma notices Masumi and confesses to him that he is worried for Maya: the girl is in love with her purple rose fan, and her love is as pure and absolute as Akoya’s. Masumi is upset. Tsukikage at the Kid’s Studio Kuronuma receives a telephone call and is very nervous and embarrassed. Tsukikage sensei is back, and she is coming to see Maya’s Akoya...

| Volume 44 Maya goes to the Japanese National Theatre Association to ask the president where Tsukikage sensei is, but the president is not in. On her way out, the young actress meets Eisuke Hayami.
They are very happy for the unexpected event and go to an elegant café to eat a parfait. Maya is surprised to see Eisuke enjoying so much the big ice cream and he confesses he hardly has had a chance to do it; so he thanks Maya for giving him the chance: he wouldn't go to a café alone. Maya then offers to pay next time they have an ice cream together! Eisuke almost chokes! Maya explains to Eisuke that she is looking for Tsukikage sensei to ask for advice, and the old man tells her he saw someone looking like Tsukikage and gives her the directions.
Time to part. Eisuke almost loses balance when getting into the car from the wheelchair, even if helped by some of his employees. Maya promptly supports him by the arm, and the old man, impressed by her kindness, smiles tenderly at her. In the car, one of his employees asks him how he could eat that big ice cream, exchange mobile phone number and email, but Eisuke asks him to shut up... He's got a tummy ache! The man remarks that he has never seen Eisuke so amused, and Eisuke admits that Maya is very amusing. He wonders how it is possible that his son Masumi has known her for 7 years and has always remained unmoved. The old man decides never to reveal his real identity to Maya.
Shiori meets Rei and Sayaka at a theatre and invites them for tea. She inquires about Maya's purple rose fan and the two naive actresses give her a lot of info, including the fact that Maya gave her Daddy-Long-Legs her photo album and her school diploma.
Later Shiori visits Masumi's holiday house in Izu and finds not only the photo album but also the diploma. Now there is no doubt any longer.
Maya gets to the place Eisuke Hayami told her about. It's a traditional Japanese house. The name of the president of the National Theatre Association is written above the doorbell. Genzo opens the door and explains to Maya that the president of the National Theatre Association let Tsukikage use his second house. Maya enters and finds Tsukikage sensei talking to Masumi Hayami. Maya and Masumi look at each other, astonished.
Takamiya's place. Shiori has taken Maya's photo album from Masumi's holiday house. She is crying and tearing all the photos into pieces. She wonders if Masumi's obsession with the Crimson Goddess is actually connected to his feelings for Maya. She is determined to drive Maya out of Masumi's heart at any cost.
Ondine Theatre. The rehearsals are being held without Ayumi. There are rumors that Ayumi is having special training. But Hamil is not convinced. Onodera in his office is very angry: he knows the truth. Ayumi is at the hospital, her eyes covered with bandages.

Tsukikage wants to know who gave Maya her home address, and Maya tells her about her meeting with an old man in a wheel chair. Masumi and Tsukikage are startled, but since Maya adds that the man is a kind and nice person who loves chocolate parfait, they both think it can't be Eisuke! The three have tea.

Masumi offers to help but Maya rejects him, asking him to keep out and not to be nice with her. Tsukikage asks Masumi the real reason why he came to visit her. He smiles and confesses that he came for the same reason as Maya. Tsukikage bursts into laughter: she doesn't believe he is serious. It would be a problem if the rights were given to Maya, wouldn't it? Masumi replies that he knows that Maya hates him as Tsukikage hates Eisuke. Then in his mind he compares his destiny with his father's, and finally understands how much the old man must have suffered for not being loved back. Masumi is about to leave the room, but before going away he asks his father if he likes giant parfaits. Eisuke almost chokes, and angrily denies it. Masumi believes what Eisuke said, and Eisuke is relieved that his son didn't find out the truth.

Absent-minded Maya Rei and Maya are having breakfast at their place. Maya is completely absent-minded, her eyes are red from the lack of sleep, and she doesn't feel like eating. Rei tells her off. Maya gets the train to go to the acting studio, but she almost misses the station. Kuronuma tries to make the actors understand the characters At the Kid's studio, Maya recites Akoya's lines. She is explaining that the gods are everywhere, that the world is made of couples of opposites: death/birth, heaven/earth, man/woman, etc. Kuronuma interrupts her, claiming that she is not convincing. Surely, she is thinking of how difficult the lines are. Maya confesses that she didn't understand the meaning of those words. Then, Sakurakoji is told off as well. He feels inferior to the other actor Akame, who unlike him has experience with period drama, and this worry prevents him to concentrate on acting. Kuronuma insists that all the actors have to understand and live the characters' feelings rather than try to play the part of those characters who lived 650 years ago.
Kuronuma together with Maya, Sakurakoji, and another actor go out. First, they go to a restaurant. Maya repeats the same lines she tried before, and Kuronuma seems more satisfied with the result.
Then the other two actors are asked to play their part on a flyover. Isshin confesses to Kusunoki that he is in love with Akoya even if he knows that she is not a girl like the other ones. Kusunoki replies that their love will bring the death of one of them. Isshin claims that he loves Akoya's soul and their love will not end with death. At this point Sakurakoji gets startled and Kuronuma interrupts them. The director praises the three actors since their performance has been better than before.
Sakurakoji keeps thinking of the last line he has recited Then the group moves to the Shinjuku Prefecture Palace. They go to the 45th floor, from where they have a great view of Tokyo and in the background Mt. Fuji. Kuronuma tells Maya that astronauts claim that Earth seen from above looks like a living being and they feel love for it. Maybe when men are in Space they have a god's point of view. Kuronuma thinks that maybe Akoya sees nature like astronauts see Earth from the Space. Then Maya rehearses while looking at Tokyo from the 45th floor of the building.

Kuronuma tries to make the actors understand the characters Another setting. The group rehearse in a square, in front of a modern sculpture/fountain titled "water temple" and finally in front of a circular sculpture, with some building-like shapes sticking out from the inner side. In the background, inside the circle, you can see the water temple. In Kuronuma's opinion, this represents past and present united, space and time, eternity. Maya is really impressed and recites Akoya's words once more, with trembling voice. Sakurakoji plays Isshin's part. He talks about the statues of Buddha, that are just images of Buddha, not Buddha in person. So, they have no value. But he builds them to cheer up the dead; his works are expression of his soul. Sakurakoji asks Kuronuma if he knows what Buddha, life and death represent for Isshin, but the director doesn't know what to say. Kuronuma tells Maya and Sakurakoji that the Crimson Goddess is also a love story between a goddess and the Buddha, and the actors will never be able to perform the final scene until they really understand the gods and Buddha. Ayumi's maid is observing the rehearsals. She is worried, remembering that the doctor suggested that Ayumi didn't leave the hospital before having some more tests done. But the young lady didn't want to listen. Ayumi is walking out of the washing room. Her sight is blurry but she got some medicines and she doesn't plan to give up acting. In the corridor, she passes by Hamil, who is about to greet her, but she doesn't recognize him and goes on without noticing him. Hamil is surprised and worried. Ayumi is rehearsing. Sakurakoji and the soul of the sculptor Sakurakoji is in his place. He's practicing sculpting, thinking of Kuronuma's words. He notices his grandma praying in front of the shrine dedicated to the dead. There are some offers for them in front of the shrine. Sakurakoji understands that those offers are for the souls of the dead. He understands that for Isshin, the soul lives after death and so the feeling of love for that soul. Later he visits a temple and sees old statues. He's impressed by the idea that the statues outlived the artist who made them. In this way, for Buddhism the soul lives forever, and so does Isshin's love for Akoya.
Masumi's crisis Masumi is in the same place where Maya has rehearsed, in front of the modern sculpture. He keeps asking himself what he is doing, and can't find an answer.
"Why am I here? I've heard you started rehearsing here... What are you doing? What are you thinking? Why can't I help thinking of you, even now?"
Then he remembers the words Maya told him when they last met at Tsukikage's place. Maya believes that he has found his soul mate.
"Do you really think so? The two halves of the soul that meet again. The Crimson Goddess' love... This doesn't exist. The truth... Then why can't I leave this place? Why?" Hidden behind a tree, Shiori is stalking Masumi. Then she overhears two people walking by, so she is informed that that place is where Maya rehearsed the Crimson Goddess. She understands that Masumi, in spite of his busy schedule, went there just for Maya, and promises herself that she will get Maya out of Masumi's heart.

Utako finds Ayumi sitting in a room; the light is switched off so the woman asks her daughter to switch it on. Ayumi does so but she reacts as if the light really annoyed her. Utako then gives her a postcard, claiming it's from her father. Ayumi pretends she can read it, but at some point her mother orders her to stop acting: the postcard is not even from her father!
Utako understands how serious Ayumi's condition is; she orders her to have the operation but Ayumi doesn't give in. Then Utako takes Ayumi to a theatre, switches all the lights on and asks her daughter to perform on stage. The light is too strong for the actress, it hurts her eyes. Utako scolds her. Does she want to let Maya Kitajima win? Ayumi tries to perform but her movements are clumsy and she hits everything on her way. Utako cries and asks her to stop. Ayumi is surprised that her mother is crying for her, but she is determined not to give up.
Utako meets director Onodera. She asks for the plan of the theatre, the position of lights, etc. She lets him know that she is going to direct Ayumi during the rehearsals from that moment on.
The rehearsals start. Utako is constantly shouting at Ayumi and telling her off when she makes mistakes, throwing objects at her. At lunch time, Ayumi asks Utako to pass the knife for butter to her, but Utako gives her the knife for fruit, with a sharp blade, and from the wrong side (Utako is holding it by the handle). Ayumi realizes that when she touches it, but her mother tells her that performing Crimson Goddess is as dangerous for her as grabbing that knife. Ayumi then grabs the knife and holds it tight; her hand starts bleeding. End of Volume 45
